Emoji games
- Emoji charades: spin secretly and make the face or act out the object. Faces are harder than they look; try “thinking” without touching your chin.
- Three-emoji story: spin three times and tell a story that uses all three in order. A robot, a taco and a volcano makes a better story than you would expect.
- Draw it bigger: everyone draws the emoji as a full scene. What is the ghost doing, and where?
- Emoji relay: teams take turns spinning and drawing the emoji on a whiteboard while their team guesses its name.
Three-emoji story rules for class
- Spin three emojis with remove on, and write them on the board in order.
- Students write a story of five sentences: the first emoji in the first sentence, the second in the middle, the third in the ending.
- Share in pairs, then vote for the most surprising use of the last emoji.
It works from about grade 2 as an oral story and up to grade 8 as a timed writing warm-up.
Make it yours
Add emojis from your phone or computer keyboard, one per line, with a short name after each so players agree what it is. Keep the names on: the same emoji can look different on different devices. For a check-in on how people feel, words are clearer than faces, so use the feelings wheel. For a pure drawing game, the drawing prompt wheel has more to draw.
Questions and answers
Why does each emoji have a name next to it?
Emojis are drawn differently by Apple, Google, Microsoft and others, and some look nothing alike. The name makes sure everyone is playing with the same idea.
An emoji shows up as a box. What happened?
Your device’s font does not have that emoji yet, usually because it is newer than your system. The name still shows, so the game works; or replace it with an older emoji.
