Birthstones by month
The modern list goes back to 1912, when the American jewelers’ association now called Jewelers of America published a standard list. It has been updated a few times since: tanzanite joined December in 2002 and spinel joined August in 2016.
| Month | Birthstones |
|---|---|
| January | Garnet |
| February | Amethyst |
| March | Aquamarine, bloodstone |
| April | Diamond |
| May | Emerald |
| June | Pearl, moonstone, alexandrite |
| July | Ruby |
| August | Peridot, spinel, sardonyx |
| September | Sapphire |
| October | Opal, tourmaline |
| November | Topaz, citrine |
| December | Turquoise, zircon, tanzanite |
Ways to use the wheel
- Gem science (grades 3–6): spin a stone, then research where it is mined, its color and its hardness on the Mohs scale. Diamond is a 10, the hardest; pearl and opal are much softer, which is why they scratch more easily.
- Birthday games: spin, and whoever has that birthstone tells the group one thing about their birth month.
- Craft night: spin a stone and make a bead bracelet or a paper gem in its color.
- Gift ideas: spin when you are stuck for a theme, then pick something in that stone’s color rather than the gem itself.
Make it yours
Want every stone on the wheel? Edit the entries to add the alternatives from the table, one per line, such as “Moonstone (June)” or “Tanzanite (December)”. Other countries and traditions have their own lists; the British list differs in a few months, so swap in yours if it does not match. For just the months, use the month wheel.
Questions and answers
Why do some months have more than one birthstone?
Over the years the list added stones that are easier to find or more affordable, without removing the originals. June’s pearl, moonstone and alexandrite give people a choice of looks and budgets.
Which list does this wheel use?
The modern US list maintained by Jewelers of America. It is the one most American jewelers use; traditional and other national lists can differ.
