Calendar practice for grades 1–3
- Before and after: spin, and students name the month before and the month after. December to January is the one that trips people up.
- How many days: spin and answer from the rhyme “Thirty days has September, April, June and November.” February has 28 days, or 29 in a leap year; the rest have 31. The next leap year is 2028.
- Season sort: spin, then decide the season where you live. A spin on July is summer in Chicago and winter in Sydney, which makes for a good map conversation.
- Birthday line-up: spin a month, and everyone born in it stands and lines up by date.
Planning with a month wheel
Remove the months that do not work (school terms, a busy season at work) and spin the rest to pick when the family trip, the reunion or the big clear-out happens. It turns a decision that drifts for weeks into one you can put on the calendar tonight.
For a year of monthly goals or family challenges, turn on Remove the winner after each spin and spin twelve challenges onto twelve months.
Games and writing
- Party theme: spin a month, then plan a party around its holidays or weather, even if it is currently another month. A July party in January is a strong idea.
- Story prompt: spin a month and a story setting, then write the first page.
- Guess the birthday month: one player spins secretly; the others ask yes or no questions (“Is it in spring?”) to find it in under five.
Questions and answers
Can I pick a random date, not just a month?
Spin this wheel for the month, then use the random number generator for a day from 1 to 28, 30 or 31 depending on the month.
Why are the months in order instead of mixed up?
Order makes the wheel easy to read and does not change the odds: each month has a 1 in 12 chance. Press Shuffle if you prefer them mixed.
