Dice wheel: 1 to 6

Six slices, 1 to 6, each with a 1 in 6 chance: one standard die you cannot lose under the sofa. Handy when the die is missing or the whole room needs to see the roll.

When a wheel beats a die

    • Board game nights: the die rolled off the table again, or the box came without one.
    • Classrooms: put the wheel in Full screen so 30 students see the same roll and nobody argues about a cocked die.
    • Online calls: share your screen and spin for everybody, so a remote player trusts the result.

    Play Pig with one die

    1. On your turn, spin as many times as you like, adding each number to your turn total.
    2. If you spin a 1, your turn total is wiped out and play passes on.
    3. Stop any time before a 1 to bank your turn total onto your score.
    4. The first player to reach 100 wins.

Pig takes two minutes to learn and teaches risk better than a lecture: most players settle on stopping around 20 points a turn after a few painful wipeouts.

    Draw the bug

A classic drawing game for ages 5 and up. Each part of a bug needs a number: in a common version, 6 for the body, 5 for the head, 4 for each of six legs, 3 for each eye, 2 for each antenna, 1 for the tail. You need the body before anything else and the head before eyes and antennae. First to finish the bug wins. Rules vary from family to family, so agree on them before the first spin.

    Questions and answers

Is the wheel as fair as a real die?

Each number has exactly a 1 in 6 chance on every spin, which is what an ideal die would give. Real dice are usually close, but cheap ones with scooped-out pips can lean very slightly.

What about games that need two dice?

Use the two dice wheel, which lands on totals from 2 to 12 with the same odds as a pair. To see each die separately, or roll a d8, d12 or d20, use the dice roller.

Can I make it a different kind of die?

Yes: edit the list. Type 1 to 4 for a d4, or replace the numbers with words for a story die (a place, a character, an object).
