A family game night routine
- Set a regular night and time. Weekly works better than “sometime”, and 60–90 minutes is plenty for kids under 10.
- Delete games your youngest player cannot follow yet. Go Fish, War, Snap and Pairs work from about age 4; Rummy suits about 7 and up, Cribbage about 10 and up.
- Spin for the first game. Take turns pressing Spin each week so everyone gets to “choose”.
- Play two or three games, then stop while everyone still wants more.
What you need
| Supplies | Games on the wheel |
|---|---|
| Deck of cards | Go Fish, Crazy Eights, War, Spoons, Rummy, Old Maid, Slapjack, Snap, Speed, Pairs, Cribbage |
| Dice | Farkle (six dice), Pig (one die) |
| Paper and pencils | Tic-tac-toe, dots and boxes, categories, draw and guess, trivia, bingo |
| A board or set | Checkers, chess, backgammon, mancala, dominoes, snakes and ladders |
| Nothing at all | Twenty questions, charades |
Spoons also needs real spoons, one fewer than the number of players, and Cribbage needs a board or a pencil for scoring. If your dice have gone missing, the dice roller works for Farkle and Pig.
Two quick dice games to learn tonight
- Pig: roll one die as many times as you like, adding up your score. Roll a 1 and you lose that turn’s points. Stop whenever you like to bank them. First to 100 wins.
- Farkle: roll six dice and set aside scoring dice: 1s are worth 100, 5s are 50, three of a kind is 100 times the number, and three 1s are 1,000. Reroll the rest or bank. A roll with no scoring dice loses that turn’s points. First to 10,000 wins. House scoring varies, so agree on it first.
Questions and answers
What is a good game night game for young kids?
For ages 4–6: Go Fish, Snap, Pairs and snakes and ladders. They need no reading, turns are fast, and luck evens out the age gap with older siblings.
How do we stop arguments about who picks?
That is the wheel’s job. Agree that the spin is final, with one veto per family per night. If everyone keeps asking for one game, give it a weight like “Spoons *2” so it comes up more often.
Can we add our own board games?
Yes. Add the names from your shelf, one per line, or use the board game picker wheel, which lists game types so you can spin for a mood first.
