How to make random teams
- Paste the names, one per line.
- Choose Number of teams (for example 4 teams) or People per team (for example teams of 3).
- Press Make teams or the Space bar. The names are shuffled and dealt into the teams.
- Rename a team by clicking its name, press Fun names for names like “Red Foxes”, and Copy to paste all the teams into a chat or document.
Balanced teams, every time
KeenWheel shuffles the list with a cryptographic random number generator (a Fisher–Yates shuffle, where every order is equally likely), then deals the names round the teams like cards. Team sizes never differ by more than one: 14 people in 4 teams makes two teams of 4 and two of 3. Which teams get the extra person is random too.
With People per team, the generator makes as many teams as needed and keeps them even: 10 people in teams of 4 gives 4, 3 and 3, not 4, 4 and 2.
Tips for groups that work
- Mixing skill levels: split the list in halves (say, experienced and new), make teams from each half, then pair the teams up. Each team gets some of both.
- Not happy with a split? Press Make teams again. A fresh shuffle is just as fair as the first.
- Sports and PE: use Fun names and the team colors for bibs or sides.
- On a projector: press F to show only the teams, large.
Private by design
Everything happens in your browser. Your lists are saved on this device only, and nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else. Your list and your last teams are still here when you come back.
Questions and answers
Is the team generator really random?
Yes. It uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, so every way of splitting the group is equally likely.
What happens when the numbers don’t divide evenly?
Some teams get one extra person. Sizes never differ by more than one, and which teams are bigger is chosen at random.
Can I choose the size of each team instead of the number of teams?
Yes. Switch to People per team and set the size; the generator works out how many teams that makes and keeps them balanced.
Can I name the teams?
Click any team name to type your own, or press Fun names for a color and an animal, such as “Blue Otters”.
How do I share the teams?
Press Copy to copy every team and its members as plain text, ready to paste into a chat, an email or a document.
Can I keep two people together or apart?
Not yet. For now, reshuffle until the split works for you, or make teams from two separate lists.
