The biggest number game
- Each player draws a row of four boxes for thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.
- Spin. Every player writes that digit in one empty box of their choice. Once written, it cannot move.
- Spin three more times until all boxes are full.
- Read the numbers aloud. The biggest wins the round; play five rounds.
Switch to “smallest number” or “closest to 5,000” to make players think about place value instead of just grabbing the top box for a 9. Students in grades 2–5 get the hang of it in one round.
More digit games
- Two-digit builder: spin twice for the tens and the ones. You get any number from 00 to 99, with every result equally likely.
- Decimal place: draw boxes for ones, tenths and hundredths, and play the biggest number game with a decimal point in place.
- Sum race: spin two digits; the first to call out the sum, then the product, scores.
- Mystery digit: spin, then describe the digit without saying it (“it is even, it is more than 5, it is not 8”).
Make it yours
For the youngest learners, remove 0 so every spin is something they can count. For a game that needs more high digits, weight them: “9 *2” doubles its chance. If you just need a random number in a range, the random number generator skips the building step.
Questions and answers
How is this different from the 1–10 wheel?
This one has 0 and stops at 9, so each spin is a single digit you can place in a ones, tens or hundreds column. The 1–10 wheel is better for counting and quantities.
Can a spin come up 0?
Yes, 0 has the same 1 in 10 chance as every other digit. In place value games that is the interesting part: where do you hide a zero?
