Random letter wheel, A to Z

The full alphabet, A to Z, one slice per letter. Every letter has the same chance, including the awkward ones, which is exactly what some games want.

Phonics games for pre-K to grade 1

    • Sound hunt: spin, say the letter’s sound, then everyone finds something in the room that starts with it. Give a minute; for X, accept things that end in the sound, like box.
    • Letter of the day: spin each morning with remove on, so you cover the whole alphabet in 26 school days.
    • Upper and lower: spin, and students write the capital and the small letter on their whiteboards.
    • Air writing: spin and trace the letter in the air with a finger, then on a partner’s back.

    Name, place, animal

    1. Everyone draws columns: Name, Place, Animal, Food, Thing. Add more for older players.
    2. Spin a letter. Each player fills every column with a word starting with that letter.
    3. The first to finish shouts “stop” and everyone puts down their pens.
    4. Score 10 points for an answer nobody else has, 5 for a shared answer, 0 for a blank.

With all 26 letters, someone will eventually face Q or X. Some groups love that; if yours does not, use the game letter wheel, which leaves the hard letters out.

    More ideas

Spin a letter and tell a story where every sentence starts with it. Spin two letters and invent a band name from them. For a spelling warm-up, spin and list as many words as you can in a minute. For vowel practice only, try the vowel wheel.

    Questions and answers

Can I take out letters that are too hard?

Yes. Delete them from the entry box, or keep them with a weight of zero (“X *0”) so they stay listed but never come up. Reset restores all 26.

How do I go through the alphabet without repeats?

Turn on Remove the winner after each spin. Each letter can only come up once until you reset the wheel.
