Why Q, U, V, X, Y and Z are missing
Category games ask for something like “a vegetable” or “a job” that starts with the letter. Few everyday words begin with Q, X or Z, and V, Y and U run dry quickly once you need ten categories in a row. A round on X tends to end with everyone blank and nobody scoring. Many letter dice made for list games leave out the same six for the same reason.
Prefer a challenge? Add any of them back on a new line, or give them a small chance with weights.
How to play a category list game
- Write a list of 10 to 12 categories everyone can see: an animal, a country, a food, a boy’s name, a girl’s name, something in a kitchen, a TV show, a sport, a job, a color, a brand, a song.
- Spin the letter. Start a phone timer for 2 minutes (3 for younger players).
- Everyone writes one answer per category that starts with the letter.
- Read answers aloud category by category. An answer nobody else wrote scores 1 point; matching answers score nothing.
- Play three rounds with Remove on, so the letter changes each time.
House rules worth agreeing first
- Alliteration bonus: “Purple Penguin” for an animal on P scores 2 points.
- Articles: “The”, “A” and “An” do not count as the first word.
- Challenges: if the group votes an answer down by majority, it scores nothing.
- Kids’ version: five categories, no time limit, and a point for every answer.
Questions and answers
Why is U out when it is a vowel?
Because the game is about first letters, and categories like animal, food or city have only a handful of common answers starting with U. It is a fair letter in a word game, but a frustrating one in a list game. The full alphabet is on the letter wheel.
Can I use this for other word games?
Yes. It works for “name five things that start with”, alliteration storytelling, and as the starting letter for a drawing round of Pictionary-style words.
How do I keep a letter from coming up twice in one game?
Use Remove on the winner card after each round, or turn on Remove the winner after each spin in Options. With 20 letters, that gives you 20 different rounds.
