Start with the person, then spin

    1. Write down three things the person loves and one thing they complained about lately. That is your filter.
    2. Spin. Then ask how this type of gift could connect to one of those four things.
    3. If it can’t, spin again. Two or three spins usually produce something that feels thought-through.

A “Book” for a gardener becomes a book on growing vegetables. A “Coupon book” for a busy parent becomes five vouchers for an hour of babysitting. The wheel gives the shape; you fill in the person.

    Gift ideas by budget style

    • Free or nearly free: handwritten letter, coupon book (“one home-cooked dinner”, “I’ll wash your car”), a playlist with a card, a day out together on foot, a photo album of printed photos you already have.
    • Homemade: cookies, a jar of layered cookie mix with the recipe tied on, a seed kit in an envelope, a framed drawing or print.
    • Small budget: houseplant, mug and loose tea, cozy socks, a candle, a jigsaw puzzle, a snack box of their favorites.
    • Bigger budget: an experience, a cooking class, event tickets, a good hobby starter kit, a personalized item.

Save one wheel per budget in My wheels so you can spin the right one for a birthday, a thank-you or a Secret Santa limit.

    Questions and answers

What does “Something they lost” mean?

Replace something they mentioned losing or breaking: a favorite water bottle, a kitchen tool, the scarf they left on a train. It shows you listen, and it often costs very little.

Can I use this for Secret Santa?

Yes, for ideas. To draw who gives to whom, put everyone’s name on the random name picker and remove each name once it is drawn. Agree a spending limit first and spin the wheel that fits it.
