Match the activity to the energy

A rainy day goes wrong when calm activities meet bouncing kids. Spin with the mood in mind, or split the list into two saved wheels.

    • Burn energy: freeze dance, obstacle course, balloon volleyball, hide and seek, kids yoga, puddle walk in boots and raincoats (skip it in thunder).
    • Settle down: read aloud, jigsaw puzzle, origami, drawing contest, play dough, write a comic.
    • Big projects: blanket fort, living room camping, puppet show, time capsule. These can fill an afternoon.

    Quick setups

    • Obstacle course: crawl under a table, step across a line of pillows, five jumping jacks, carry a spoon with a ball of socks back to the start. Time each run.
    • Balloon volleyball: a string or a row of chairs as the net, one balloon, and the ball may not touch the floor. Move breakables first.
    • Kitchen science: baking soda and vinegar in a cup on a tray, or ice cubes with salt and food coloring. An adult stays close.
    • Time capsule: a shoebox, a letter to your future self, a drawing, today’s weather. Label it “open in one year”.
    • Puppet show: socks or paper bags for puppets, a table on its side for a stage, and a three-scene story.

    Questions and answers

How do I stop the kids spinning until they get the movie?

Agree one spin per activity, and use Remove the winner after each spin so the list moves on. You can also hide “Movie and popcorn” for now and bring it back as the last activity of the day.

Is there a list for adults on their own?

Try the bored wheel, with solo ideas from learning a card trick to clearing one drawer. For a long run of wet days, the craft ideas wheel gives you more projects.
