    The 30-day hobby trial

    1. Spin once. Remove any hobby you already have or one you physically can’t do, and spin again if needed.
    2. Spend nothing at first, or as little as possible. Borrow books from the library, watch free beginner lessons, use what you have at home.
    3. Do it three times a week for 20–30 minutes, for four weeks. Write one line after each session: what you did, how it felt.
    4. After a month, decide: keep it, buy proper gear, or spin again. Most people know within three weeks.

Cheap first steps for a few of them

    • Knitting: one pair of medium needles and a ball of smooth, light-colored yarn. Learn the knit stitch and make a dishcloth.
    • Chess: learn how each piece moves, then play short games against a beginner-level computer or a friend.
    • Birdwatching: sit by a window or in a park for 15 minutes and count species. A free bird identification guide helps.
    • Pottery: start with air-dry clay at the kitchen table. Pinch pots first, before you think about a wheel or a class.
    • Coding: pick one language with a large beginner community and build something tiny, like a tip calculator.
    • Rock climbing: go to an indoor wall with a beginner session and staff to show you the safety basics.

    Questions and answers

How do I narrow it to hobbies that suit me?

Make two or three versions and save them in My wheels: “Quiet hobbies”, “Outdoor hobbies”, “Social hobbies”. Then spin the one that matches what you are missing in your week.

What if I don’t stick with it?

That is normal and fine. A month of trying something is not wasted: you learned what you don’t enjoy. Remove it with the winner card and spin again. The bored wheel has smaller one-off ideas if a full hobby feels like too much right now.
