Quick rules for six favorites
- Builders and bulldozers (K–5): scatter 30–40 cones, half standing, half knocked over. Builders stand cones up, bulldozers knock them down with their hands (no kicking). Play 90 seconds, count standing cones, swap teams.
- Clean your room (K–5): split the gym in half with a line. Throw soft balls and beanbags into the other half; when the whistle goes after 2 minutes, the side with fewer items wins.
- Rock-paper-scissors tag (grades 2–8): two teams meet in the middle, each secretly agreeing on one throw. The winning team chases the losing team back to its safe line 10–15 meters away, and anyone tagged joins the winners.
- Hula hoop pass (all ages): the class holds hands in a circle and passes a hoop all the way round without letting go. Time it, then try to beat the time.
- Steal the bacon (grades 2–6): two teams on opposite lines, each player numbered. Call a number; the two players race to grab a beanbag in the middle and get it home without being tagged.
- Cooperative musical hoops (K–3): like musical chairs, but when a hoop is removed, nobody is out: children share hoops until the whole class squeezes into the last few.
Running it in class
- Trim the wheel to games that suit your grade band, space and equipment, and save versions such as “K–2 games” and “Grades 3–5 games” under My wheels.
- Put the wheel on the projector in full screen and let a student spin as a reward for a good transition or warm-up.
- Turn on Remove the winner after each spin so the same game does not come up two lessons running.
- Explain the rules in under a minute, play a short practice round, then go.
Keeping it safe and inclusive
Every game on the list keeps all players involved and avoids anyone being a target. Dodgeball and similar games are left out on purpose: many PE departments avoid games where children throw at each other. In tag games, tag with a light touch below the shoulders or use pool noodles. For elimination games such as four corners, bring players back in after one round so no one sits out for long.
Questions and answers
Which games need no equipment at all?
Freeze tag, partner tag, rock-paper-scissors tag, Simon says, red light green light, mirror moves and four corners (use the corners of the gym). Everything else needs at most cones, beanbags, soft balls or hoops.
How do I pick teams quickly?
Use the team generator on the projector so nobody is picked last. For partner games, the random name picker works with remove on.
Are these good for indoor recess?
Several are: Simon says, balloon keep-up, mirror moves and four corners fit in a classroom with the desks pushed back. The brain break wheel has more short ideas for small spaces.
