Reps and setup for the main drills
- Mikan drill: stand under the hoop and make alternating layups, right hand on the right side, left on the left, without letting the ball touch the floor. Aim for 10 makes in a row, or as many as you can in 30 seconds.
- Form shooting: one hand only, 3 feet from the rim, then 6, then 9. Make 10 from each distance before stepping back.
- Free throws: 2 sets of 10, taking a short jog between sets so your legs feel tired, like in a game.
- Two-ball dribbling: dribble two balls at once, together then alternating, for 30 seconds each. Great for the weaker hand.
- Defensive slides: stay low, push off the trail foot, do not cross your feet. Slide the width of the lane 4 times, rest, repeat 3 sets.
- 3-man weave: three players run the full court passing and cutting behind the receiver, finishing with a layup. No dribbling allowed.
- Shell drill: 4-on-4 half-court, offense passes around the perimeter while defenders shift on every pass between on-ball, help and deny positions.
Building a practice
- Warm up for 8–10 minutes: jog, dynamic stretches, then easy layups.
- Spin once for ball handling or shooting and run it for 10 minutes.
- Spin again for a defensive or team drill and run that for 10–15 minutes.
- Play controlled scrimmage for the rest of the session, and end with free throws while players catch their breath.
If you have a mixed group, sort the list into a “Shooting” wheel and a “Defense” wheel under My wheels, and spin one of each.
Questions and answers
Which drills work alone?
Mikan drill, form shooting, free throws, spot shooting, elbow jumpers, around the world, and all the dribbling drills. Partner passing works against a wall too.
Is Knockout a good drill for kids?
It is fun, but players who are knocked out stop shooting. Keep them busy: send them to a second hoop to play their own round, so nobody sits on the bench for long.
How do I pick teams for the scrimmage?
Use the team generator to split the group fairly. The agility drill wheel adds footwork work for the warm-up.
