One minute challenge wheel

Twenty-six tasks that last exactly one minute and leave you with a number: reps, words, items. That number is the point, because next time you try to beat it.

    How to run it

    1. Have a timer everyone can hear, such as a phone or kitchen timer set to 60 seconds.
    2. Spin, read the challenge out, and give the player 10 seconds to set up.
    3. Start the timer. Someone else counts: reps, words, cups, whatever the slice asks for.
    4. Write the score next to the player’s name. Beat it on a later spin to earn a star.

    Three ways to play

    • Personal bests: one player, many days. Keep a sheet on the fridge and watch “most jumping jacks” climb over a month.
    • Head to head: two players do the same challenge at once. Best score wins the round; first to three rounds wins.
    • Class contest: spin one challenge for the whole class, and everyone does it at their desk while you time it. The brain slices (name 20 animals, count back by 3s) work when you need the room quiet.

    Fairness and safety

Physical challenges (jumping jacks, wall sit, hopping) should come after a minute of marching on the spot, and anyone can stop early if something hurts. Their score is whatever they reached.

Mix brain and body slices so players who are not sporty still get chances to win. For kids aged 5–7, swap counting back by 3s for counting back from 20, and say the alphabet backwards instead of writing it.

    Questions and answers

Do the challenges need special equipment?

Only household things: paper, a few plastic cups, a deck of cards, dominoes, a book, socks, string, beads and a feather or a scrap of tissue. Delete any slice you cannot set up before you start.

What age is the one minute challenge wheel for?

About 6 and up. Teens and adults enjoy the head-to-head version, especially cup stacking and the word lists, where being older does not guarantee a win.

How do I keep track of scores?

The Results tab lists every spin with its time, so you can see which challenges came up and in what order. Write the scores themselves on paper next to each name, or on the board in class.
