    How the activities work

    • Marshmallow challenge (18 min): teams of four get 20 sticks of dry spaghetti, about a meter (a yard) each of tape and string, and one marshmallow. Tallest freestanding tower with the marshmallow on top wins.
    • Common ground (10 min): in groups of three or four, find five things everyone has in common that have nothing to do with work.
    • Back-to-back drawing (15 min): one partner describes a simple picture, the other draws it without seeing it. Swap, then compare.
    • Paper tower (15 min): the tallest tower built from 20 sheets of paper and nothing else.
    • Lost at sea (25 min): rank 15 survival items alone, then as a team, and compare both with the expert ranking. Teams usually beat most of their own members, which is the point.
    • Skill swap (20 min): pairs teach each other something in ten minutes each, from a spreadsheet shortcut to a card trick.
    • Silent line-up (5 min): line up by birthday month without saying a word.

The rest explain themselves: two truths and a lie, trivia, a scavenger hunt around the office, three desert island picks each, a story told one sentence per person, draw and guess, a gratitude round, a jigsaw raced in two teams, or two minutes of show and tell.

    Run it well

    1. Delete what won’t work for your group before you spin: no space to stand, no supplies, or a game the team played last month.
    2. Mix people up with the team generator so friends don’t cluster. Teams of three to five suit most of these.
    3. Spin in full screen on the meeting room screen, explain the rules in one minute, and put a visible clock up.
    4. Keep five minutes at the end to ask what the activity showed about how you work together. That debrief is what turns a game into team building.

    Keep it inclusive

Nothing on this list needs physical contact, running or alcohol, and all of it fits in work hours. Avoid anything that pushes people to share personal stories. For two truths and a lie, remind everyone that a fact about a favorite food counts.

Offer side roles to anyone who would rather not join the main task: timekeeper, judge, or the person reading out the trivia questions. Someone sitting out by choice is fine.

    Questions and answers

How long should a team building activity last?

In a regular team meeting, 10–15 minutes. At a planned session or offsite, 30–45 minutes per activity including the debrief. Three short activities usually go down better than one long one.

What is the best activity for a brand-new team?

Common ground or two truths and a lie. Both help people learn names and something about each other with no risk. Save competitive builds like the marshmallow challenge until people know each other a little.

Our team is remote. Will these work?

Some will, like trivia, story chain and the gratitude round. For games made for calls, spin the virtual team games wheel instead.
