Stand-up order wheel

A template for the daily stand-up: put your team’s names on the wheel and let it call the order, so it isn’t always the same person going first or getting rushed at the end.

    Set it up once

    1. Delete the example names and type your team, one per line. Leave out the host if they usually close the stand-up.
    2. Open Options and turn on “Remove the winner after each spin”. Each name leaves the wheel once it is picked, so nobody is called twice.
    3. Save the list under My wheels as “Stand-up”. Send the Share link to whoever covers for you on holiday, so they have the same list.

    The daily routine

    1. Share your screen with the wheel in full screen (press F), or put it on the team room display.
    2. Spin. The person picked gives their update, then the host spins again for the next one.
    3. Keep each update to about a minute: what moved since yesterday, what is next today, and anything blocking you. Ten people at a minute each fit a 15-minute slot with time to wrap up.
    4. Anything that turns into a discussion goes on a “parking lot” list. The people who need it stay afterwards; everyone else leaves on time.
    5. Next morning, open your saved list from My wheels so every name is back on the wheel.

    When the team changes

    • Someone is off today: add “*0” after their name (“Priya *0”). The wheel leaves them out but keeps them in your list. Delete the “*0” when they’re back.
    • Someone joins late: let them go last rather than spinning again.
    • Walk the board instead: some teams skip names and go through the board column by column, right to left. The wheel still helps: put workstreams or board columns on it and spin the order of those.

    Questions and answers

    Why randomize the stand-up order?

A fixed order lets people tune out until their slot, and the same voice sets the tone every day. A random order keeps everyone listening and spreads the awkward first slot around. It also stops one person always getting the rushed final minute.

    Who should run the wheel?

Anyone. Many teams pass the host role around weekly, which gives quieter people practice running a short meeting. To rotate other jobs too, use the meeting roles wheel.

Does everyone need the page open?

No. Only the person sharing their screen needs it, and everyone else watches the spin on the call. If teammates want their own copy, send the Share link: the names travel inside the link itself.
