Which countries count as Asian here
The list follows the UN Statistics Division’s regional grouping and includes only UN member states. Five regions make up the 47: Central Asia (5 countries), East Asia (5), Southeast Asia (11), South Asia (9) and West Asia (17).
Transcontinental countries go where the UN puts them. Türkiye, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia are here. Cyprus is here too, although it is an EU member. Russia is counted with Europe and Egypt with Africa, so they are on those wheels. Palestine (a UN observer state) and Taiwan are not UN member states and are not on the default list; add any place your syllabus covers.
Ways to use it
- One region at a time: 47 countries is a lot for a first quiz. Delete everything except Southeast Asia’s 11, learn those, then add the next region.
- Landlocked or not: spin and decide whether the country has a sea coast. Mongolia, Nepal, Bhutan, Laos and the Central Asian states are good surprises. Uzbekistan is doubly landlocked: every neighbor is landlocked too, which only one other country in the world (Liechtenstein) shares.
- Research partners: with Remove the winner after each spin on, every pair in a class of up to 47 gets a different country for a poster or presentation.
- Food and festivals: spin for a country and find one dish and one holiday from it. Pair it with the cuisine wheel for a theme dinner at home.
Questions and answers
Why is Cyprus on the Asian wheel?
Geographically the island sits in the eastern Mediterranean, south of Türkiye, and the UN groups it under West Asia. Politically it is part of the European Union. If you prefer to treat it as European, delete it here and add it to the European wheel.
Is Russia in Asia?
Most of Russia’s land is in Asia, but its capital and most of its people are in Europe, and the UN counts it as Eastern Europe. That is why it sits on the European wheel. Type it in here if your lesson treats it as both.
Which is the smallest country on the wheel?
The Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, is the smallest in Asia by both area and population. Singapore and Bahrain are also very small by area.
