    What the list includes

These are the 54 African UN member states, the same 54 most atlases and teachers count. Egypt is included even though its Sinai Peninsula lies in Asia. Island nations count too: Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Cabo Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe.

Western Sahara, a disputed territory, and Somaliland, which is not recognized as a country by the UN, are not on the wheel. Names follow current official short forms: Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) and Cabo Verde (often called Cape Verde in English). There are two Congos, so they are labeled “Republic of the Congo” (capital Brazzaville) and “DR Congo” (the Democratic Republic of the Congo, capital Kinshasa).

    Quiz and class ideas

    • Regions: spin and say whether the country is in North, West, Central, East or Southern Africa.
    • Landlocked: 16 African countries have no coast, including Ethiopia, Uganda, Chad and Botswana. Lesotho is entirely surrounded by South Africa.
    • Superlatives: Algeria is the largest by area, Nigeria has the most people, Seychelles is the smallest, and South Sudan, independent since 2011, is the newest.
    • Country of the week: spin each Monday with remove on and build a classroom display through the year. With 54 countries, that is more than a school year of weeks.

    Questions and answers

How many countries are in Africa?

There are 54 UN member states, which is the usual answer and the list on this wheel. Some counts reach 55 or 56 by adding Western Sahara or Somaliland, whose status is disputed.

Why does the wheel say Côte d’Ivoire and not Ivory Coast?

Côte d’Ivoire is the name the country asks others to use, in every language, and it is the name used at the UN. Edit the slice to “Ivory Coast” if your class knows it that way.

Can I use it alongside the other continent wheels?

Yes. Spin the continent wheel first, then the matching country wheel. For a mixed list of 100 countries across all continents, use the country wheel.
