Which definition of Europe this wheel uses

Where Europe ends is a matter of convention, so the list follows one clear rule: the UN member states that the United Nations Statistics Division groups under Europe. That gives 43 countries. Russia is included, because the UN counts it as Eastern Europe even though most of its land is in Asia.

Türkiye, Cyprus, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are grouped by the UN under Asia, so they are on the Asian country wheel instead. Vatican City (a UN observer state) and Kosovo (not a UN member) are left off as well. If your class counts any of them as European, type them into the box: it takes ten seconds.

    Quiz rounds that work

    • Capital round: spin and name the capital. Easy ones (Paris, Rome) and harder ones (Chișinău for Moldova, Podgorica for Montenegro) come up at random, so mixed-ability groups stay interested.
    • EU or not: 26 of the 27 European Union members are on this wheel; the 27th, Cyprus, is not, because of the UN grouping. Players say whether the spun country is in the EU.
    • Neighbors: name every country that borders the result. Iceland, Ireland and Malta are quick; Germany, with nine neighbors, takes a while.
    • Microstates: Andorra, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco and San Marino are tiny. Ask which is smallest (Monaco, at about 2 square kilometers).

    Make it fit your lesson

    Questions and answers

How many countries are in Europe?

It depends on the definition. This wheel uses the UN’s grouping, which gives 43 member states. Counts you see elsewhere, from 44 to about 50, add Vatican City, Kosovo, Cyprus and the countries that straddle Europe and Asia.

Why is the United Kingdom on it if it left the EU?

Leaving the European Union did not move the country. The wheel is about the continent, not the EU, and the UK has always been part of Europe.

Can I pick a travel destination with it?

Yes. Trim it to countries you can reach, spin once for the country, then spin the world city wheel or list cities from that country for a second round.
