Roll a character in three spins

    1. Spin for the class.
    2. Spin again and treat the second result as a past life: a wizard who used to be a knight fights differently from one who was always bookish.
    3. Pick one flaw and one goal yourself. The class tells you what the character does; the flaw and goal tell you who they are.
    4. Name them, or spin the character wheel for a personality to build on.

    Building a balanced party

Tabletop groups of 3–5 players usually want someone who can take hits, someone who heals, someone who deals damage and someone who solves problems outside combat. If everyone spins freely, you might end up with three bards.

    • Spin with removal on: turn on Remove the winner after each spin so no class is taken twice.
    • Role first, then class: split the list into fighters, casters, healers and sneaks, and spin within the role the party is missing.
    • One free swap: after everyone spins, two players can trade classes once if both agree.

    For video games

Many RPGs ask you to choose a class or build at the start. Rename the entries to match your game, delete the ones it does not have, and save the list in My wheels. A random class is a good excuse to replay an RPG you have already finished.

    Questions and answers

What do the classes do, roughly?

Warriors, knights and barbarians fight up close; wizards, sorcerers and elementalists cast attack spells; clerics, healers and druids support the party; rogues, spies and rangers scout and strike from the shadows or at range. The rest blend two roles, like the paladin, a fighter who can heal.

What is a good class for a first-time player?

Warrior or ranger. Both have simple choices each turn and characters tough enough that one mistake will not end the game. Save wizard and summoner for a second campaign, since they have more to track.

    Can kids use this wheel?

Yes. Fantasy classes are an easy way into storytelling games for ages 8 and up. Younger kids enjoy spinning a class and drawing their hero, then telling you what quest they are on.
