Decision wheel

Put your real options on the wheel and spin, or use the twelve nudges already on it when the question is “should I do this at all?”. Either way, watch how you feel when it stops.

How to decide with a wheel

    1. Clear the box and type each option on its own line. Two to eight options work best.
    2. Delete any option you would be unhappy to land on. If you cannot delete it, it was never really an option.
    3. Spin once. Before you read the result, notice whether you are hoping for one slice in particular.
    4. If you feel relief, go with it. If you feel disappointed, you have found your real answer: choose the one you were hoping for.

This is the same trick people use with a coin: the spin does not decide for you, it shows you what you already wanted.

    Using the ready-made nudges

The twelve entries already on the wheel are for a different question: you know what the choice is, but not whether or when to act. They lean toward small, safe moves: try it for a week, do a small version, set a deadline. If the wheel says Ask a friend, message one person tonight rather than polling everyone you know.

For a plain yes or no, the yes or no wheel is quicker. For exactly two options, try the this or that wheel.

Weights, and when not to spin

If you lean toward one option but want the wheel to keep you honest, give it a weight: “Move to the coast *2” is twice as likely as anything else. It is a fair way to let a preference count without pretending it does not exist.

Do not hand big, hard-to-undo decisions about money, health or other people to a wheel. Use it to break ties between options you have already thought through, and to get unstuck on the small things that eat an afternoon.

    Questions and answers

Is it silly to make decisions with a spinner?

Not for choices between options that are all acceptable. Most people lose far more time going round in circles than the choice is worth. A spin ends the loop, and you can still overrule it.

How many options can I put on the wheel?

Up to 100, but a decision is easier with fewer. If you have more than eight, spin once with Remove the winner after each spin on to knock options out until three are left, then choose.

Can I save a decision wheel for later?

Yes. My wheels keeps named wheels in this browser, and Share link gives you a link with the options inside, if you want someone else to spin it.
