What each drink is
- Americano: espresso topped up with hot water.
- Cappuccino: espresso with steamed milk and a thick layer of foam.
- Latte: espresso with more steamed milk and a thin layer of foam. Milder than a cappuccino.
- Flat white: a smaller, stronger-tasting milky coffee with a thin, velvety microfoam.
- Cortado: espresso cut with about the same amount of warm milk.
- Macchiato: espresso “marked” with a spoonful of milk foam.
- Cold brew: ground coffee steeped in cold water for 12–24 hours, then strained.
- Vietnamese iced coffee: strong drip coffee over sweetened condensed milk and ice.
- Affogato: a shot of espresso poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Ways to use the coffee wheel
- Try every drink once: turn on Remove the winner after each spin and order what lands each time you visit a café. The Results tab shows how far you have got.
- Office coffee run: put everyone’s usual order on the wheel and spin who fetches. Or spin the drink for a person who “does not mind”.
- Home barista practice: spin, then make the drink. Cortado, flat white and latte use the same shot with different milk, which is good practice for steaming.
Make it yours
Add the seasonal drinks on your café’s board, or the syrups you keep at home (caramel, hazelnut). If you drink less caffeine after lunch, save an afternoon copy in My wheels with decaf versions only.
Questions and answers
Which drink has the most caffeine?
It depends on the number of shots and the brew, not the name. A latte and a cappuccino made with the same double shot have the same caffeine; the milk only changes the taste. Ask the café how many shots go in.
What is the difference between a latte and a flat white?
A flat white is usually smaller, with less milk and a thinner, smoother foam, so the coffee tastes stronger. A latte is bigger and milkier.
Is there a version for kids?
Children should skip the caffeine. Swap the list for hot chocolate, steamed milk with vanilla, a fruit smoothie and a mocktail or two.
